Punishment of Apostasy in Islam

Apostasy is commonly defined in Islam as the rejection in word or deed of one's former religion. Apostasy or irtidād in Islam is equal to treason. Tawhid, nubuwwa, and qiyāma form the constitution of Islam. Just as upholding and protecting the constitution of a country is sign of patriotism, and undermining it is a form of treason - in the same way open rejection of the fundamental beliefs of Islam by a Muslim is an act of treason.

Quran says that : "The unbelievers should not think that We are granting them respite for their own good, rather We grant them respite so that they may (eventually) increase in sins and (accordingly) they shall have a disgraceful chastisement." (3:178)
